Bruichladdich Distillery was built by the Harvey brothers in 1881 on the Rinns of Islay, the western peninsula of the island of Islay. The name Bruichladdich comes from the Gaelic for 'Brae of the Shore' - Bruthach a' Chladaich. The distillery closed many times throughout its history and was re-opened in its current form in 2001.
Since Bruichladdich’s resurrection in 2001, the distillery team have aimed to be an antidote to the industry norm. As 'Progressive Hebridean Distillers', they want to reconnect whisky with the land, re-evaluate where flavour comes from and use the business as a force for good for the community, local agriculture and the planet; ensuring that Islay and its people are at the heart of every decision the distillery make. Bruichladdich's commitment to local growers for over two decades has not only created incredible flavour but has supported the local farming community and created provenance and traceability which has added value well beyond the distillery gates: from one farmer in 2004, Bruichladdich now works with 19 local farming partners.
Nose: delicate floral notes along with sweet malt and ripe grain open on the nose. Hints of pepper and soft spices follow before the dram reveals soft stoned fruits and creamy vanilla. Creamy vanilla, a hint of coconut, butterscotch, and brown sugar come from the oak, alongside delicate notes of nutmeg and hazelnut. Fruit notes continue to open, with fragrant peach, honeyed melon, pear drops and warm banana bread.
Palate: creamy vanilla and lemon are immediate on the palate, with a peppery nutmeg spice giving way to sweet malt, warm porridge and popcorn. The depth of flavour and creamy, viscous texture is typical of our Islay barley style, with the natural oils from the barley enhanced with layers of sweet citrus, tropical fruit and fragrant peach. The combination of American and French oak makes for a beautifully balanced expression, with a drop of water bringing out subtle marine notes.
